Learning from disagreement

A changed conclusion is evidence of learning when the record preserves what changed it.

epistemologyreviewdecision making

Current explanation

Useful disagreement names the competing models, the evidence each predicts, and the observation that separates them. A revision should preserve the older framing and the reason it lost rather than silently rewriting history. This turns correction into reusable judgment instead of embarrassment or scorekeeping.

Lesson path

  1. 01

    Name models

    current

Write the two strongest competing explanations.

  2. 02

    Find a discriminator

    next

Choose evidence that can make either model lose.

  3. 03

    Record the revision

    next

State what changed and what remains uncertain.

Open questions

  • When is disagreement resolved enough to act?

Selected Q&A

Does changing course reduce confidence?

It can increase confidence in the process when the update follows a predeclared discriminator rather than social pressure.

Next actions

  • Rewrite one recent reversal as two competing predictions.
